Heater Trouble-Shooting Guide

Following is a list of basic heater problems along with manufacturer-suggested solutions:


Heater fails to heat the pool or spa water to the desired temperature


PROBLEM

System is not running long enough.

Dirty Filter is keeping the heater from firing.

Thermostat is faulty or out of adjustment.

Pressure switch is inoperative.

Heater is too small.

Gas system is under sized.


SOLUTION

Reset time clock.

Backwash filter.

Test & replace thermostat as needed.

With a clean filter, test switch; replace if necc.

Consult heater-sizing chart and upsize unit.

Check gas-pipe sizing charts and upsize plumbing; check meter & supply shut-off valve for proper sizing.
   
Heater goes on and off repeatedly

Problem

Filter is dirty

Pool water level is low

Manual bypass is out of adjustment

Pressure switch is out of adjustment
Solution

Backwash filter

Raise water level

Adjust bypass

Adjust pressure switch and verify that heater shuts off when system's pump is off
   
Soot has formed in combustion chamber


Problem

Excessive water is flowing through heater

Air supply is inadequate



Air inlet or venturi for burner is plugged



Time clock prevents heater from running long enough to heat water

Gas valve regulator is out of adjustment


Solution

Correct water flow and clean heat exchanger

Check installation for proper clearances and/or venting(Indoors, verify adequacy of air supply and venting.)

Check for debris, dirt, insects or small animals in burner inlet throat or venturi and clean

Adjust time clock and clean heat exchanger


Test for proper gas pressure and adjust regulator as needed or replace gas valve
